A gravel roof is usually a flat one with gravel tipped on top of it. A gravel layer at least 7 cm thick provides protection from ultra violet rays and therefore prevents heating building up on the roof’s surface. The gravel acts as a filter for the rainwater, which means that run-off is not slowed down by dirt. Good drainage on the gravel roof means that rainwater quickly runs off and therefore makes the waterproofing membranes last longer. At the same time, the weight of the gravel layer prevents suction during gales.
